STARS OF THE SKY:

Visible stars: It is estimated that nearly 9.000 can be seen with the naked eye, but of course, that is counting all those in the celestial vault.

North & South: The earth is opaque, so during one night we can only see half of it, this means that there are constellations that can only be seen in the northem hemisphere and other can only be seen in the southern

Winter & Summer: The time of year also plays a role, the sun blocks one side of the dome, so we can only see the opposite side at night, at six months, the Earth moves and the roles change, that is why we have summer constellations and winter ones.

Circumpolar stars: Even so, there are stars so close to the poles that they are always visible in their respective hemispheres, and they have been especially useful to humanity.

Star movements: You have to realize that during the night the entire sky changes, not because the stars move, but because the earth rotares, and as it rotares, it points to different areas of the sky.

Center of rotation: During the night you will see constellations and planets that will appear on the horizon and others that will disappear, the movement is in circles, being its center at some midpoint in the sky.

Constelaciones del año

Translation: Every year, the Earth completes one orbit around the Sun, which causes the seasons.

Rotation: Every day, the Earth rotates on its axis, causing day and night, and that is why it appears that the sun moves from east to west.

Seasonal constellations: This combination of rotations causes certain constellations to be visible on the nights of the year for half the year and other constellations for the other half.

The zodiacal constellations: From our perspective, the daily east to west movement of the Sun seems to pass directly in front the zodiacal constellations, that happend because both are align in the ecliptic, the orbit of out solar system, therefore, thoose constellations cannot all be seen at the same time in the sky.

Eclipsed by the sun: Someone born under the zodiac sign of Sagittarius means that during the month of December, the sun was positioned opposite the constellation Sagittarius; therefore, at that time, this constellation is not visible, and instead, you would be able to see the constellations located on the opposite side of the ecliptic.

Orientation with the constellations: During the day, you can use the sun to determine east and west, at night, you can use the zodiac constellations for the same purpose.

The direction in which the zodiac constellations rise is east, and the direction in which they set is west.

To use this method, you’ll need to start by learning some of the zodiac constellations.

Zenith:

North Pole: If you were right at the North pole, the Earth axis of rotation, if you looked up you would see all the stars revolving arround the point directly above your head, what its called the Zenith

South Pole Something similar would happend if you were at the the South pole, only that the rotation would be reversed

Other latitudes: If you move you another latitude, down from the North pole this center deviates and we get and intermediate result, where we can see the sky moving arround one point in the sky that it’s not above us.

Polar Star:

Polaris: It the northen hemisphere, there is the casuality that there is a star very, very close to the center of rotation, the famoues Polaris Star

The North: If you identify it, you know that if you head towards it you are going north, functioning as a natural compass

Calculate latitude: And seeing how low it is on the horizon tells you the latitude where you are.

How to find it:

  • The North star is the tail of Ursa Minor, the constellation the Greeks gave to this group of stars.

  • The usual way to spot it is by using the Ursa Major, a bigger version that stands out more, also commonly called the ladle, or the cart.

  • You olny have to find the Cart, take its front part and multiply it about 5 times, and you will get the North star.

Southern Cross

In the southern hemisphere we have something similar, we are not lucky enough to have a star right in the celestial south, bu we can locate using the Southen Cross

To do it, take the major axis, extend it 4 and a half times and there you have the south

These ancient tricks surround us more than one might think

The word Artic comes from the Greek “Artikos” which means “Near the bear”, “Near the north”

On the other way, Antartica comes from “Antarktikos”, as if it were “Anti-Artic” “the opposite of near the south bear”, that is, near the south pole

Cefeo

You have located Polaris, which is the tip of the handle Ursa minor, tilted towars the handle of this saucepan, we have a little house, This is Cepheus

If you are lucky and you get a good sky, you will see that right below the little house there’s a star that is very orange

Something similar happens to the star at the top of the southern cross, the stars have different colors that can be seen with the naked eye

Dragon

Between the two bears we have thail of the Dragon, Follow the curves of the tail and you will reach the hed

If you look very closely, you will see that one i¡of its stars has a slightly strange shape, it is an sllipse instead of a circle

This is because Kuma is a dual system, althought it would be a more accurate to say that it is a triple system, it is a binay system separated from a solitary star, althought it is suspected that it may be anohter binary system

Mizar and Alcor

There’s a similar system in the Ursa Major: Mizar and Alcor, which are at the handle of the ladle

Viewing the two separately can be complicated, in fact the arabs used this system to test how good their eyesight was

Alco itself is a binary system, while Mizar is a quadruple system, making that little dot a combo of 6 suns

It is not known if they are truly doubles, there is the posibility that they are two stars that are actually separated by colossal distances, only that from the earth they appear to be almosr aligned, which is called an “otical double”

Corona borealis and Hercules

Once you have located Cepheo using the head of the draco, look at the opposite, you will find some stars rhat make a semicircle, this is the Corona Borealis

Between Draco’s head and the Crown you can Identify a square, this is the Body of Hercules

And you have you very good eyesight, one one side of this square, the closest to the Crown, you can see that there is a kind of a blurry star, easly to see with binoculars, what you are seeing is the Hercules Cluster

The Global Clusters are groups of thousands of stars that are located outside the disk of the galaxy, orbiting within its halo, usually very old structures, stars fhat formed in the early stages of out galaxy

Orion And Tauro

Orion is one the elements that can be seen more or less from both hemispheres

It is very easy to identify, his stars are bright and his belt with three stars makes him highlight

Betelgeuse can help to identify it, Its a red giant stars, Is Orion’s shoulder, the arm with which he is reasing a weapon

And against whom does he raise it? in front of him you will see a star similar to Betelgeusa called Aldebaran, the head of Taurus, the bull

Why Orion is attacking Taurus? Because Taurus is protecting the Pleiades, a small group of stars very close together, at first glance, you can distingish 6

Casiopea and the milky way

Very Close to Cepheus, the are some stars that form a W/M, This is cassiopeia,

If your sky is dark enough you will see that Cassiopeia is above a brighter area of the sky

There is a kind of cloud that travels across the sky from one side to the other, that gives the sensation of have a lot of detail but is dificult to resolve with the eye

In cultures such as India or Chine this stroke was interpreted as a river, for other as the vikings was a path to valhalla and in Spain was orientate to pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostela

In the greek culture all the versions have in common that Hercules, when was a baby was being breastfed by Hera and the reason the milk was spilled and formed a path, the Milky way

What we are seeing is the galaxy in which we live in profile, is the accumulated brighness of the millions of stars in the galaxy, dulled by its distance, from the Southerm hemisphere and Ecuador is possible to appreciate it better, from there is possible to see the center of the galaxy, much more brighter and with its dust clouds

Boyero:

Polaris wasn’t always the north star, in 12.000 years will be Vega

The light that we see is from the past, the light from the Sun takes 8 minutes to arrive, the one from the moon takes almost 1,3 seg

Constelaciones y asterismos:

The sky has been the only calendar that the humanity had for milleniums, all these stories and names were not created just for fun, but for survival

The night sky is beautiful and has been a canvas on which humanity, individually has expressed its culture, but it has also been a tool for navigating, orienting, cultivating and ultimately having some control over the future
